Xavier Mendoza

Xavier is a Catalan singer trained at the Escolania de Montserrat (Montserrat Children's choir) and later at the Musikhochschule in Freiburg (Germany), with the tenor Werner Hollweg and the pedagogue B.Heuer-Christen. 

In Germany, he took part in the following productions: Così fan tutte (Guglielmo), le Nozze di Figaro (Conte), Die Prinzessin auf der Erbse, Die Junglinge im Feueroffen, La Bohème (Schaundard) and premiered the contemporary opera Heimat at the State Theater of the city of Freiburg (2001).

He won the special prize for the best Catalan singer at the “V Jaume Aragall International Singing Competition”, the “Medalla” at the 46th Maria Canals International Competition, the "Extraordinary Prize" at the "International Competition  Germans Pla de Balaguer" and was a finalist at the "Ferrucio Tagliavini International Competition" in Austria. 

He entered the world of Lieder at the hands of pianist Irvin Gage in Zurich, he has sung Brahms, Schumann, Schubert, Ravel in different recitals, cycles such as Vier Ernste Gasänge, Platen Lieder, Liederkreis op.24, Winterreise, Don Quichote a Dulcinée …

In 2004, he settled in Catalonia. Since then he has taken part in a total of twenty-six operas in productions at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Campoamor Theater in Oviedo, the Cervantes Theater in Malaga, Villamarta Theater in Jerez and the Teatre Lliure of Barcelona. He also tours with different independent opera companies in other Spanish theaters in Valladolid, Pamplona, Bilbao, Valencia, La Coruña, the Granada and Perelada International Summer Festival…

The oratorio is an important part of his artistic activity. He has sung Bach's two Passions, the Christmas Oratorio, Bach's Magnificat, Mozart's Mass in C minor and Beethoven's Mass in C Major, Charpentier's Te Deum, the Requiems by Mozart, Brahms and Fauré, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony , Händel's Messiah, Dvorak's Sabat Mater or Haydn's Creation among others.

He has great experience in contemporary music. Thus, in his professional career, he has had the opportunity to premier in a total of ten operas by relevant Spanish composers such as Xavier Montsalvatge, Agustí Charles, Enric Palomar, Xavier Benguerel, David del Puerto, Jesus Rueda or Javier Árias.

He works regularly with the foundations "El instante fundación" in Madrid and the "Studium Aureum Foundation" in Palma de Mallorca. For the forme he premieres in contemporary operas conducted by the artist José Maria Sicilia and for the latter he collaborates in the solo parts of oratorios and takes part in concerts of early music concerts.

In the pedagogical aspect, he has been a professor at the Barcelona Lyceum Conservatory, at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, directs the Ópera Jove Association for the promotion of new voices and is an artistic adviser to El Cor de l'Empordà where he programs and prepares great works of sacred repertoire such as Mozart's Requiem, Händel's Messiah or Bach's St. John's Passion.

He currently resides in Ireland.
